LAUGHTER GUARANTEED!

We can sit down and be frightened of all the things that might happen in our lives. Most of what we fear most likely will never happen. This means most of the times we fear something just by picturing the image we have produced of it ourselves. Maybe we are taking ourselves a bit too serious.
Check out this wonderful video: laughter guaranteed!

SUICIDE ATTEMPT AT WORK: LABOUR ACCIDENT.

Attempt to suicide has been acknowledged as labour accident by a Belgium Court. In a 'sudden fit of insanity' said to be caused by stress at work drove a civil servant to set himself on fire. Consequently law allows a claim for the employee to submit of a couple of million Euros. Source: "Het Nieuwsblad".

With lots of companies having specific protocols for mobbing, one would suggest that we would refraine from mistreating our fellow collegues. On the other hand, one should perhaps wonder to what extend anyone could be held reliable for another one's dramatic actions, such as -in this case- (attempt to) commit suicide ...

PRIVACY?…THROWN OUT OF WINDOW!

Walking through the streets of Antwerp, I noticed a protest sign against a certain group in society. Thinking it would interesting to write something about the impact of specific 'groups' in a workingplace, I was taken aback by my own fear, because of what other people might think of my opinion.

I'm sure that nowadays we don't express ourselves the way we would like to at work or in public, because we could risk a penalty. It's a shame that with this notion we have thrown privacy out of the window, in order to have a sense of perceived  security. Just be happy to think that next time you're being scanned at the airport, what's going on in your head is still private...just now.

PAID LEAVE ON DAY OF ROYAL WEDDING?

The government of the British Isles has declared 29 April 2011 -the day of the royal wedding- to be a bank holiday (article Telegraph announcing bank holiday). Nowhere in British media it is being said who is going to pay for this.

In Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, when state declares a public holiday, it is regarded as paid leave. Paid leave implying leave paid by employer.

In England and Wales there is no automatic right for an employee to have the day off on a bank holiday, it depends on the employment contract. If employees actually work on a bank holiday, their pay for the day will depend on their contract, as there is no statutory right to overtime or time off in lieu.

Where in some so-called Rheinland-countries such as Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands goverment decide to give everyone a day off at the expense of the employer, the Anglo-Saxon system is different. But their nation's culture is not determined by a social-democratic disposition.

Britain, one of Anglo-Saxon countries, can be caracterized as having a more individualistic culture then the Rheinland countries, so no wonder interference of the state is limited. It would be interesting to see however, if Rheinland countries would have had an event with such a huge perceived importance, people and government would embrace the idea of having a mandotory day off in order to celebrate a royal event. Knowing their sence of tradition the British could probably not be bothered...

AUTHENTICITY AS KEY SUCCES FACTOR

People Management advices to build authenticity in our business and lives. We should be doing the right thing; act with integrity, bringing your best to work, be a positive role model and so on. The article shows you how to build authenticity. http://www.peoplemanagement.co.uk/pm/articles/2010/10/how-to-build-authenticity.htm?wa_src=email&wa_pub=cipd&wa_crt=editorial_1_none&wa_cmp=cipdupdate_131010. The one thing the article doesn't touch; it basically comes down to living our lives to the fullest, living towards we really are. It's a pity our system we live in usually doesn't encourage living the way we should be living...

INCREASE OF INTERNATIONAL ASSIGMENTS!

Despite the current situation, international operating companies are still expanding the amount of international assigments. Lack of suitable local candidates is reason for Europe and Asia to go for sending employees abroad, whilst in the US the mean reason is cost-effectiveness. Mercer’s International Assignments Survey 2010 (http://www.mercer.nl/press-releases/1392525) has shown the trend for increasing international assigments, which might be valued differently with future demografic changes ahead.

The choice between hiring locally or sending experts from HQ cannot be looked upon without taking into account the need to stimulate transparancy and avoid uncertainty fed by current economic condition worldwide...

EQUAL SWEDES USE INCENTIVE TO IMPROVE THEIR EDUCATION

The Swedes are worried about the quality of their edecuational system. As with the other Nordic countries, Sweden's culture shows quite some feminity and therefore tendency to equality, which dramatically effects the educational institution.

The Swedish National Agency for Education (Skolverket) consider the ownward trend of delivering poorer quality students leaving their primary and secondary schools as a thread to individual students as well for Swedish businesses!

Having one of the most equal cultures worldwide, the Swedes urges to use financial incentives for indivual schools to perform better!http://www.svensktnaringsliv.se/english/result-based-national-grant-system-will-raise-school-quality_116605.html

One could wonder if these discussions would occur in countries were performances have greater effect -both positive as well as in a negative direction- in countries with more masculin culture such as France, UK, US of Japan!

ECONOMIC SET-BACK ENCOURAGES FRAUD!

An UK-based survey shows that 52 % of the respondents in the public sector had recently suffered staff fraud compared to a global average of 32 %.

One could wonder whether morals apparently on the British isles differ from the rest of the world.  Apart from that, obviously economic set-back leads to poorer ethics...?

WOMEN CHANGE THE WORLD

Nobody would argue with the working power of women around the globe. Perhaps one could acknowledge that they are paid less even for equal jobs performed. Following Norway, Europe is thinking of regulation to have equal share of male/female in the board of a company.

Alicia King suggest 5 steps women can take to improve rights for women. http://gender-equality-activists.suite101.com/article.cfm/five-steps-women-can-take-today-to-change-the-world.

What about the women wanting to (part-time) take care of children and by doing so not persuing the same career as the male collegue?

NON-CASH INCENTIVES, EFFECTIVE MOTIVATORS!

Praise and attention from management and opportunities for employees to lead projects are at least as effective motivators as bonusses, increase of base pay or stock(options).

When these non-cash incentives are being given on a regular basis, the management's desire to increase cash benefits takes the attention away from the real issue: how to intrinsically motivate my people?
